Despite efforts to make workplaces
safe and healthful, each day thousands of workers are injured
on the job or become sick as a result of their work.
When these injuries and illnesses
occur, workers can be left with big medical bills and loss of
income. Workers' Compensation is designed to lift some of that
burden off of injured workers. Workers' Compensation pays medical
bills and partially replaces lost income for people hurt on the
job.
If an on-the-job injury or illness
causes you to lose more than a week from work, you are probably
entitled to workers' compensation. Occupational illnesses include
conditions that result from on-the-job stress, such as high blood
pressure, heart disease and psychological disorders.
If you have an occupational injury
or illness the first place to call is your union, if you have
one. If you need information about how to file a claim, contact
NYCOSH or your nearest Committee for Occupational Safety and
Health (COSH). For a list of COSHs, click
